Easily one of the year's most divisive titles due to its wealth (about $136 worth) of downloadable content, Evolve is best experienced as a multiplayer shooting match between space colonists (aka Hunters) and the aliens who are determined to destroy them (monsters who go by the names of Goliath, Kraken, Wraith, and Behemoth). Since its release earlier this week, the game has earned strong reviews, with PC Gamer calling it "an excellent competitive game . . . with splashy particle effects, smart UI, and monsters worth of Pacific Rim."
As for its expandable pay-to-play universe, creative director Phil Robb rationalized its many skin packs and add-on characters in a recent Destructoid interview. "We have the game set up in such a way that we can expand upon it if that is the desire," he explained. "Our plan is one we pushed for as consumers. Never split the community, no pay to win, all that kind of bullshit that are hallmarks of DLC plans specifically made to leech money out of people."
